1. Watch Here.

In early 2004, Against me! toured the US with Lucero and The Grabass Charlestons. I brought along my crappy, old and outdated Hi-8 Sony Handycam. Since I was usually behind the lens of a 35mm camera, and I’d always loved all kinds of visual arts, I was excited to do a little filming on tour. I shot this particular night in Memphis, Lucero’s hometown, and then a show at Gilman St. in Berkeley, CA.

At the time, this cut from “As the Eternal Cowboy” was my favorite AM! song.

  3. I realize this shot looks like hell (read below), but I just love the passion these guys have.

I have this Nikon FM2 that I would bring on tour. The shutter may fire once out of four tries. It took a tumble off of the roof of a car at one point, and light would get in because the camera would not seal correctly. Still, I would get the itch to shoot some film with it and I’d break it out while touring with Against Me!. In this case, I shot some Ilford 3200 BW. Grainy as hell, temperamental, but still fun to shoot with.

Grainy as hell, temperamental, but still fun to shoot with. This club was hot, sweaty, filled with energy, the seams ready to bust. There was occasionally a real risk factor in some of these old buildings that people turned into clubs. The old wooden floors with century old, weak, splintered beams would bend as the crowds jumped up and down. Balconies, like the one in this shot, were never meant to hold such weight, even when they were new. It really added to the excitement in the air. Those shows were very intimate and special.

  5. This is the theater that premiered the movie, Jaws. On this night, Against Me! played there with the Blood Brothers and True North. It was a packed house, and being that it was in LA, Keith Morris was in attendance. When the band found out, they were excited and asked me to go bring him back stage. I found him at the merch table purchasing a True North record. When I asked him if he’d like to come back and meet Against Me!, he politely told me he’s sick and wouldn’t want to give anyone germs or get germs from anyone. I thought ‘Strange, you’re at a sold out concert with a thousand others”. Guess he really was a True North fan… the only one.
